Goodbye to the Old Diamond Head Theater!
Was very sad to hear the announcement that after the October performance run of "Anything Goes", they would not only be shutting down the old Diamond Head Theater...but demolishing it!
We had known for some time that a new theater was coming up right next door to the original, but I thought they'd keep the old place for its historic significance! Not only was it an beloved landmark, it was one of the oldest still-running theaters in AMERICA!
But no, they had no plans to keep it, and after the final performance on October 2nd, the directors, staff, and cast all got together to lovingly scribble post-scripts onto the walls of the old place as a heartfelt "goodbye"....
I've always been obsessed with the place ever since I was a child, when I would see the grownups congregating around the courtyard during intermissions when i rode past on my bike.
Sadly, I only ever got to actually see ONE performance there, when my friend's mother, who was a DHT member, wasn't going to go to that month's show and told us we could have her seats!
It was a very enthusiastic performance of "Singing In the Rain" and I loved it! Even back then without the threat of the theater being torn down, I knew it was a special experience to be cherished!
It will be missed!
